RAIN RESTORES MOISTURE; OFFICALS LIFT LOCAL FIRE DANGER BURN BAN THURSDAY MORNING
(KITSAP COUNTY, Washington) – The Kitsap County Fire Chiefs’ Association, in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office, announced they are lifting the outdoor fire burning ban at 8:00 am, Thursday.
This summer’s unusually warm and dry weather left the area’s vegetation dangerously parched, and the ban was implemented because outdoor fires are the leading cause of brush and forest fires. The past week’s significant and sustained rainfall has restored the moisture content of local vegetation, decreasing fire danger. Officials note that fire danger remains moderate, and caution the public to observe all applicable rules and safety practices when conducting outdoor fires.
Effective September 1 of this year, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) permanently outlawed land-clearing fires – those fires conducted for the purpose of debris removal following land-clearing operations – across Kitsap County. More information about PSCAA’s rule change is available at that agency’s website: www.pscleanair.org. In Kitsap County’s cities and other densely-populated areas, other outdoor burning restrictions have been in force since January 2001.
